APLS Group Institute, the education service branch of NC training and consulting firm, APLS Group, has created a Go Fund Me site that debuts on September 8, 2015. We are seeking contributions to fund the workshop; College and the Business of Athletics, to be offered free of charge to student- athletes and their parents/guardians in 21 North Carolina middle and high schools in working class communities throughout the state. The schools were selected based on low reading and math scores as reported by the North Carolina School Report Card.
The workshop stresses the importance of maintaining high academic skills to complement athletic skills in order to secure access to college, as well as considering options for careers beyond sports. New NCAA academic eligibility rules and new SAT college entrance exams begin in 2016. These students will be left out of the competition without access to the information the workshop provides.
We are using Go Fund Me to raise the money to cover the cost of presenting College and the Business of Athletics to the students who need the information and support the most. All contributions will be used 100% for delivering the program. The presenters are Karen Parker, a veteran school counselor, and Nick Vassil, former AAU and Little League coach and father of a former NC State football player.
